Customized Solutions For Freight And Logistics

How Does Freight Forwarders' Liability Insurance Work?

Freight forwarders’ liability insurance provides financial protection against specific risks associated with their operations. Freight forwarding companies serve as vital intermediaries, leveraging their network of trusted contacts to secure optimal routes and competitive rates for their clients

Beyond coordinating cargo movement, they handle critical responsibilities such as documentation and customs clearance to ensure seamless logistics operations.

Here is an overview of the process:

Stage 1: Agreement

This process, commonly called “coverage activation,” represents the foundational step in the logistics and shipping journey. At this stage, the shipper and freight forwarder formalise their partnership through a detailed agreement.

This contract outlines essential terms, including the type of cargo, origin and destination points, transportation mode, and associated costs.

Coverage activation is crucial because it ensures that the relevant policy is in place to safeguard the shipment.

The policy is triggered in the event of specific covered incidents, such as:

  • Cargo damage
  • Loss during transit
  • Customs fines or penalties
  • Third-party claims

By establishing clear terms upfront, both parties can mitigate risk and ensure smoother, more secure logistics operations.

Stage 2: Origin Handling

In the event of an incident, the freight forwarder promptly submits a claim to the insurance provider, outlining the details of the occurrence and furnishing the required documentation, such as:

  • Bills of lading
  • Inspection reports
  • Other relevant paperwork

Simultaneously, the freight forwarder coordinates the pickup of the goods from the shipper’s premises. The goods are transported to the designated origin port or airport for further processing.

This stage often includes packaging, labelling, and preparing the goods for their onward journey, ensuring compliance with shipping requirements and facilitating smooth transit.

Stage 3: Export Customs Clearance

The freight forwarder assists the shipper in completing the necessary customs documentation for exporting the goods, ensuring that all required documents, such as invoices, packing lists, and certificates of origin, are in order. The goods are then inspected by customs officials and cleared for export.

Stage 4: Import Customs Clearance

Once the goods arrive at the destination port or airport, the freight forwarder handles the import customs clearance process. This involves submitting the necessary documentation to customs authorities and paying applicable duties and taxes. The goods are then inspected and released by customs officials.

Stage 5: Onward to the Final Destination

The freight forwarder arranges for the transportation of the goods from the port or airport to the final destination, which could be the consignee’s warehouse, store, or other designated location, which may involve using trucks, trains, or other modes of transport.

Freight forwarders are the unsung heroes of hassle-free shipping. They handle everything from organising transportation and managing paperwork to easily navigating customs.
